The Bureau of Land Management announced this week that the Vernal Field Office will be implementing the Tom Patterson Prescribed Fire in Uintah County in October. This project is a multi-year treatment to promote grass and brush habitat in the southern part of the county within the Bookcliffs along the McCook Ridge Road. It will remove encroaching Juniper and Pinyon Pine species. The burn area is about 26,000 acres with 10,000 acres targeted for burning in a mosaic fire pattern. The BLM is creating a fire black line along the McCook Ridge Road to consume vegetation about 100 to 1000 feet directly west of the road. The road serves as a central holding line for the project to prevent east fire spread. McCook Ridge Road will be closed wherever there is active ignition and signs will be placed on the roadway in the prescribed fire vicinity. Questions can be directed to Kelsey Birchell at
