The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office wants everyone to have safe experiences on Flaming Gorge this ice fishing season and are offering their top safety tips. First, remember, there is no such thing as safe ice as ice conditions can fluctuate drastically over short times and distances, especially in reservoirs like Flaming Gorge. Always exercise caution and never become complacent. Avoid ice on moving water such as in the Green River. Check ice thickness before venturing out and check thickness every 100 to 150 feet. Clear ice 4 inches thick or more is generally considered safe. Never ice fish alone. Wearing a personal flotation device is highly recommended. While guidelines exist for appropriate ice thickness for taking snow machines or vehicles on the ice, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office recommends never taking motorized vehicles of any kind onto the ice, regardless of thickness. “Ice fishing is a great sport and we want everyone to have a good time,” shares Sheriff Mike Lowell, “but we also want everyone to stay safe.”
