Uintah County and local city officials met on Monday with the Central Canal among the topics of continued discussion. Officials received a proposal to conduct a drainage study of what is affected by the Central Canal. During their January 22nd meeting, President of Central Canal, Wayne Simper, explained that irrigators want to line Central Canal to help eliminate water loss and so it is easier to maintain. He also stated that they understand that Kid’s Canal, which is included in Central Canal, is a recreational site and he welcomed input. While the irrigators would like to pipe the entire canal, Simper explained they cannot afford to do so at this time so the plan is to pipe from 500 South across Highway 40 to the end of the canal approximately 3 ½ miles away and that they are still considering what to do between 500 North and 500 South. Monday’s meeting focused on how to handle stormwater if the canal is piped. Stormwater would need to be rerouted or addressed somehow. Uintah County and city officials are considering the proposal to conduct a drainage study but did not make a decision on Monday.
