Mitt Romney’s stop to the Uintah Basin included a visit to the AM920 studio for an interview on issues of significance to the Uintah Basin. Transportation is always a hot topic of concern in the Basin as there is no seaport, rail, or interstate to serve the area and only Highway 40 as a means of exporting oil, gas, and other goods. When asked about the topic, Romney emphasized that transportation issues ought to be managed and guided at the state level, not the federal level. He stated that a gasoline tax is collected and then sent to Washington D.C. where it is decided how to spend it. “That doesn’t make sense to me,” says Romney, who explained that those dollars should stay in Utah and then the legislature can decide the best projects for the state…including projects to develop rural counties in the state.
