RJHS Students Take Dress Code Concerns to Community Council

A group of Roosevelt Junior High School students made an emotional presentation to their school’s Community Council this week, asking for changes to the school dress code. The group, made primarily of 8th graders, held a silent peaceful protest on Monday morning to bring attention to issues they see with the dress code after they say a student was not allowed to take the Sage Test because the pants she was wearing were the popular distressed style. A group of 12 students brought their concerns to the Community Council using a powerpoint presentation they titled “Educate Us, Don’t Judge Us.” The group suggested that Roosevelt Junior High adopt the Union High School dress code among other things. They also asked that if the current dress code is kept in place, that it be enforced the exact same way for every student and that it only be enforced  when it poses a “substantial disruption” to the learning environment as is written in District policy. The group also claimed there is an issue of female students being singled out and that some feel uncomfortable and harrassed. The Council listened to the students concerns and said they will discuss changes for the upcoming school year. The students plan to also take their concerns to the school board.
