Law enforcement agencies across the Basin are driving home the message of crosswalk safety with the new school year. Roosevelt Police Chief Rick Harrison is adding his voice to those urging pedestrians and drivers to use caution in and around crossing zones. “We remind drivers to stop at marked crosswalks as soon as a pedestrian approaches the crosswalk,” shares Chief Harrison. “Allow pedestrians to completely exit the roadway before proceeding. As crosswalks at schools can be heavily used by students at class breaks and before and after school, it would be preferable to take alternative routes if feasible.” The reminder is especially timely in Roosevelt where Roosevelt City has installed two new crosswalks at the new Union High School. “It is the responsibility of the driver and the pedestrian to cross safely,” says Chief Harrison, “but around schools, drivers must be the more vigilant party.”
