While the Boone Draw Fire, located 50 miles west of Craig, did cross into a wild horse management area, officials are reporting that the herd in that area has not been displaced to a great extent. According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, 202 acres of the 8,683 acre fire are within the Sand Wash Basin Wild Horse Herd Management Area. “Firefighters have observed horses enter the burned area, drink from springs, and exit toward Seven Mile Ridge,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “The fire has burned some fence around the Herd Management Area. Temporary fencing has been put in place in affected areas.” Fire activity on the Boone Draw Fire, which started on September 13th, has greatly reduced and crews achieved 80 percent containment on Monday. Visitors looking for horse viewing opportunities can still access the Herd Management Area by way of County Road 75, north of the fire.
