April happens to be National Social Security Month and the Social Security Administration wants the public to know about common scams that they are seeing involving social security. If you get a call or email from someone that is claiming to be a government employee and they threaten or demand an immediate payment, that is a huge red flag. Social Security may call but they will NEVER threaten you, suspend your Social Security number, demand immediate payment, require payment by cash, gift card, pre-paid debit card, or wire transfer; ask for gift card numbers over the phone, or ask to wire or mail cash. If you receive a questionable call, hang up and report it at oig.ssa.gov.
