Black bears, Ursus americanus, are currently the only bear species in Utah and are known residents within northeastern Utah. The Utah Department of Natural Resources has a timely message to share about bear safety. Since bears eat almost anything, there is a high probability to have an encounter with a bear when outdoors with food. If you live in the foothills or any mountainous part of the state please take these precautions. Dispose of trash carefully. Secure or remove food sources that attract wildlife, such as bird feeders, barbeque grills and unclean utensils, pet food and water bowls, unattended pets (especially at night), unfenced fruit trees, garden plots, compost piles and beehives. If the bears persist you should consider deterrence such as electric fencing or installing motion-activated lights or noisemakers. If camping or hiking, go in groups. Stay alert at dawn and dusk when the bears are more active. Be sure to keep the campsite clean and never keep food, drinks, or scented items in your tent.
