A UBTech gathering to celebrate a new scholarship partnership with Mountain America Credit Union provided an opportunity recently for students to share the impact scholarships have on not just their education but their lives. The Mountain America scholarship funds are to assist students that enroll in one of the college’s business certificates and a theme emerged during the special luncheon to thank Mountain America for their partnership. UBTech business program instructor Dr. Lyndsay Brown emphasized that these scholarships especially help women coming back to school, usually after many years away from formal education. Several first hand examples were shared, showing just how needed these partnerships are. Karalee Dockter said at first it was scary to consider returning to school as an older, single mom. Now she’s completed the Office Tech certificate and is starting on a second Administrative Assistant certificate. Josie Baese is working on her Business Manager certificate. As a 73- year-old, she believes that “learning is a life-long process.” Monie Manning lost her job during the pandemic but was hesitant to go back to school to train for a new occupation. Now, gaining a new skill set has “been a breath of fresh air.” These were just a few of the testimonials given during the special presentation.
