Imagine getting a call from a friend who tells you they can see your 5-year-old wandering alone behind a strip club looking lost. Alyssa Boyer recently had this experience in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and the family shutters to think what could have happened if the family friend had not spotted the child. Cowboy State Daily reported that this is 5-year-old Mia’s first year riding the bus and on this day last week, Mia’s father was waiting at the bus stop that she never arrived to. Mia’s mom Alyssa said Mia got off about 7 stops too early and at no point did the bus driver or District contact the family to report that Mia was missing from the bus. The mother filed a formal complaint with Sweetwater County School District No. 1 and that’s when they heard from the Transportation Director. They were told the District has been working on new training and technology to make the buses safer and this incident is being taken seriously. The Boyers are asking the District to add protections to safeguard young riders with another set of eyes on buses during at least the first weeks of school as drivers and children are learning who gets off at which stops.
