The 2018 Utah Peace Officer’s Association K-9 Trials were held earlier this month and Uintah Basin officers and their canines represented well. 48 teams attended the competition from around the state. Jared Harrison with Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office and his 4-year-old Belgian Malinois Kimber had the best score in the narcotic vehicle search and took 5th place in Agility.

DWS Release Updated Unemployment Numbers By County
The Utah Department of Workforce Services has updated county unemployment numbers for the state. Daggett County ticked down from 4.8 to 4.7 percent unemployment. Duchesne County shifted up slightly from 4.8 to 4.9 percent while Uintah County stayed the same at 4.9 percent.
Utah Division of Water Resources Holding Open House on Water Conservation
The Utah Division of Water Resources will be in Vernal hosting an open house tonight focused on water conservation. The topic is timely as recent attention has been brought to Utah’s drought conditions after the state Drought Review and Reporting Committee was convened earlier this month for the first time in ten years.
DWR: Chukar Population Lower This Year
The number of chukars are down this year but that isn’t surprising biologists with the Division of Wildlife Resources. Upland game coordinator Jason Robinson says chukars follow a population cycle that lasts about nine to ten year during which the population remains stable for about 8 years, then skyrockets for one year, after which numbers lower to the long term average.

The fall burning window has opened up and here’s the information you need to know. Uintah Fire District shares that fall yard clean-up is for the purpose of open burning of clippings, brushes, plants, and pruning. Residential cleanup is allowed but no trash, tires, or oil can be burned or used to keep fires burning.
Vernal City Council on Board with Dino Trails Committee Trails Master Plan
Years of brainstorming, studies, and collaboration have paid off as the Dino Trails Committee has presented their final Trails Master Plan to local stakeholders. Sunrise Engineering presented the final plan to the Vernal City Council during their September 4th meeting and Vernal City Council gave the plan their final approval during their September 18th meeting.
Uintah Basin Youth Pheasant Hunt This Saturday
The Uintah Basin Youth Pheasant Hunt is this Saturday, September 22nd, at Pleasant Valley. This is the only one of these events hosted by the Division of Wildlife Resources being held in the northern zone of the state. The southern zone hunt is taking place on September 29th.
Utah a Top-Performing State for Unemployment Insurance Operations
The Utah Department of Workforce Services was recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday for being a top-performing state for operating its unemployment insurance and appeals programs faster and more effective than other medium-sized states. “From serving employers to job seekers, we are a key contributor to Utah’s strong economy by bridging the gap of unemployment,” shares DWS executive director Jon Pierpont.
Roosevelt Branch Library’s Fandom Party a Mighty Success
Big city displays filled the Grace Event Center during the Roosevelt Branch Library Fandom party over the weekend. “”It was amazing,” shares Roosevelt Librarian Stephen Moon. “We had prizes from D.C. Entertainment, Wizard World Conventions, and New York Comic Con.” Over 150 people attended the event and everything ran smoothly.
