Vernal Chamber Total Citizen of the Year: Mark Mason

Good company, great food, and ambiance filled the Uintah Conference Center on Thursday night for the 68th annual meeting and awards dinner for the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce. Utah Department of Transportation Executive Director Carlos Braceras kicked off the event as the special guest speaker who delivered a powerful message on transportation needs statewide and within the Uintah Basin, driving home the message that seatbelts save lives by citing statistics. 

Busy Season Ahead for Uintah Basin Transportation Improvements

Tis’ the season for orange cones and construction workers. The 2017 construction season is underway and UDOT plans to stay busy in the Uintah Basin. Work is already underway on the Highway 40 Myton to Roosevelt widening project that will add two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, a 14-foot center median turn lane and 10-foot shoulders.

New Daggett County Sheriff Nominated

The Daggett County Republican Committee announced their nominee to serve out the remainder of Jerry Jorgensen’s term as the Daggett County Sheriff. Sheriff Jorgensen submitted his resignation in April, citing his desire to help the county move forward in the process with the Utah Department of Corrections after state inmates were removed as part of an investigation into inmate abuse.

2017 Special Olympics Underway

A very special group of athletes will make their way down Main Street in Vernal today for the 2017 Special Olympics torch run. This year the athletes will be on bikes and riding on a firetruck between the Uintah County buildings starting at 2:30, heading west and ending at Wendy’s by 3:00pm. 

DWR Reminders for Spring and Summer

The Division of Wildlife Resources has several reminders for recreators this spring and summer. There is big water on the Green River these days, shares DWR regional aquatics manager Trina Hedrick. Remember that the bypass flows are being released from Flaming Gorge Dam and caution is needed while fishing and boating.

Former Deputy’s Actions Constitute “Unbelievably Inhumane Conduct”

The criminal misconduct at the heart of the Daggett County Jail scandal has received serious condemnation from the Attorney General’s Office. The charges were announced on May 5th after an investigation by the Utah Department of Corrections Law Enforcement Bureau and a review of the findings by the Office of the Attorney General.
