The annual gathering of real life superheroes was a success over the weekend at the Uintah Basin Emergency Care Conference held at the Uintah Conference Center. “UBECC 2020 was a hit,” shares event committee member and Gold Cross Director Scott Adams. “We had approximately 200 in attendance with presenters from all over the country, such as the mascot for the Kansas City Chiefs.” Audience members were from the Uintah Basin and beyond and consisted mostly of Dispatch, EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement, and Hospital Staff.

Craig Mother Sentenced in Toddler Son’s Christmas Eve Death
The mother of the toddler boy who died in a house fire on Christmas Eve in 2018 has been sentenced in Moffat County District Court. 27-year-old Vanessa Jenkins changed her plea from Not Guilty to Guilty of Criminally Negligent Homicide, a class 5 felony, in November ahead of her scheduled December trial.
Roosevelt Man Killed in Tanker Truck Crash in Duchesne County
Authorities have released the name of a Roosevelt man who died in a tanker truck crash in Duchesne County on Friday. According to the release from the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, they were “dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover crash involving a tanker truck near 13000 West and 3800 South in the Arcadia area of the county. When deputies arrived, the driver of the truck was deceased.” The driver was 59-year-old Kevin Olin Nye of Roosevelt. Deputies do not know what caused Nye to go off the road and are continuing to investigate.
$40,000 in Damage in Uintah County Home Fire
According to a release from the Uintah Fire District, the Naples City Fire Department received a page for a house fire at 6150 South 1500 East in Vernal at approximately 1am on February 8th. “Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from a trailer house in a mobile home park,” shares Uintah Fire District. “Two adults (a husband and wife) and a pet dog had exited the structure before arrival of firefighters. Crews immediately made entry to the home through the front door and found heavy smoke and fire in the back bedroom.
Union Boys Swim Become State Champions
The Union High School boys swim team have claimed the title of 3A state champions. “The top three teams were separated by only 3 points as the team race was as close as it gets,” shares the Union Cougars news announcement on Saturday. “The entire swim team did great as they had several great performances.” The Boys 200 Medley team placed 2nd. The Boys 400 Freestyle relay placed 2nd. Taylor Hawkins placed 4th in the 200 Individual Medley. Dylan Hawkins placed 5th in the 100 Butterfly.
USU Uintah Basin Excited to Announce New Offering Within Nursing Program
Nursing shortages have been an ongoing issue in the state and rural areas have been hit hardest, including the Uintah Basin. Utah State University has announced a new offering with their nursing program that is expected to help meet the industry’s needs and it will be available through the USU Uintah Basin campus. The College of Education and Human Services will offer a new online Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) completion program.
Plea Agreement Reached in Case of Money Stolen from Children’s Justice Center
The Vernal woman charged with felony Theft after being accused of stealing money from the Uintah & Daggett Counties Children’s Justice Center last fall has entered a plea of Guilty to a lesser charge in 8th District Court. 41-year-old Michelle Lyn Coon served as the Treasurer for the ‘Friends of Uintah & Daggett Counties Children’s Justice Center’. After suspicious account activity was noticed, Uintah County requested that an outside agency conduct an investigation. A Wasatch County officer performed the investigation that led to Coon’s arrest and a formal charge of Second Degree Felony Theft.

Local Athletes Enjoy Fantastic Day at Special Olympics Snowshoe Invitational
Our local special olympians had a fantastic day competing at the 2020 Special Olympics Snowshoe Invitational held January 29th at Soldier Hollow. “It was an amazing day,” shares Coach Brett Reynolds. “Each athlete competed in three races [and] all came home with awards. We had the oldest competitor and one of the youngest so our team covers a wide age range.” The local olympians got started in the snowshoe competitions two years ago when Brett and another local Special Olympics supporter Brian Gorum heard about the state competition and decided to become certified as coaches.
Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce Holding a Valentine’s Dance
Roosevelt City kept the winter blues away with their successful Winterfest Festival. They are going to keep our hearts beating to that rhythm just in time for Valentine’s Day.
