USU Uintah Basin is doing something special to support, celebrate, and honor the women of the Uintah Basin with their Year of the Woman campaign. Each month will highlight women in categories ranging from Women’s Suffrage to Wellness & Nutrition. The category for January is Arts & Culture and the woman to be highlighted for week 2 is McKenna Christiansen. McKenna was nominated by her husband Mike Christiansen who shares that McKenna is a positive of example of proactive leadership and womanhood to local young women.

A Sleep Disorder Could Be Ruining Healthy Sleep
Sleep plays a major part in our health. Struggling to find healthy sleep habits and patterns might seem like the norm but should not be taken lightly. The sleep specialist with Ashley Regional Medical Center, Shelly Sorenesen, shares that “if you’ve tried different tactics and are still having trouble sleeping, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder. Left untreated, sleep disorders can be very damaging to a person’s overall health.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the four most common sleep disorders in the U.S. are insomnia, narcolepsy, Restless Leg Syndrome and sleep apnea.
The Odd Couple at Vernal Theatre: Live will Open Your Sinuses and Lift Your Spirits
The rest of the town may be hibernating, but Vernal Theatre: LIVE! is in the prime of its fourth season with Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple: Female Edition. There is nothing sleepy about this performance. The 1980’s reimagining of the 1960’s original male production comes to life brilliantly decked out in big earrings, bigger shoulder pads, and biggest hair.
Federal Judge Issues Decision and Order in Case of Madison Jensen Death
U.S. District Court Judge Dale A. Kimball issued a Memorandum Decision And Order on Tuesday in the case of the Estate of Madison Jody Jensen versus Duchesne County and other defendants. 21-year-old Madison Jensen was booked into Duchesne County Jail on November 27th, 2016 for internal possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Four days later at 1:28pm on December 1st, Madison was found deceased in her cell. The next day on December 2nd, the Utah Medical Examiner determined the immediate cause of death to be cardiac arrhythmia from dehydration due to opiate withdrawal.
Duchesne County School District Hosting Two Lectures to Help Kids
The Duchesne County School District takes the mental health of the kids they serve very seriously. To help both parents and children navigate the challenges of stress and mental achievement they have invited Doctor Christy Kane to share her 20 plus years of clinical experience and scientific research. Dr. Kane holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, a masters in mental health counseling, and a bachelor's degree in psychology. She will first be at Altamont High School on Wednesday, January 22nd from 6 to 7:30pm sharing how stress impacts the brain.
Uintah County Library Featuring Documentary ‘Into the Cold’
Sebastian Copeland was named one of the world’s top 25 adventurers in the last 25 years by Men’s Journal. He has led numerous expeditions into polar regions to film and photograph endangered environments. His documentary, Into the Cold, is the story of how he and his partner Keith Heger trained for and then embarked on a two-month expedition across the North Pole. They covered over 400 miles on foot through minus fifty degree weather. The film was selected for the Tribeca Film Festival in 2010 and in 2011 was part of the Environmental Film Fest, Victoria Film Fest, and the Blue Planet Film Fest.
UBAOG Will Be Conducting The 2020 Homelessness Count For The Basin
Homelessness is an issue that is on the rise throughout the nation. Last year’s homelessness count showed that Utah’s homelessness was stable. This was both good news and bad news. Good in that even though Utah was seeing rising housing costs there wasn't a dramatic increase in the homelessness population. Bad for the fact that millions was spent into efforts to reduce homelessness.
Name Released From Sunday’s Fatal Accident in Uintah County
Friends and family are mourning the loss of a local young man whose life was lost too soon. According to Utah Highway Patrol, the 24-year-old man was in a fatal accident early Sunday morning in Uintah County while traveling southbound in a 2001 Lincoln Continental on State Road 45 at Mile Marker 36 at about 4:50am. The vehicle drove off the road to the right causing the vehicle to roll. The man was ejected, receiving fatal injuries. On Monday, Utah Highway Patrol identified the man as 24-year-old Jace Bailey of Vernal. Uintah Animal Control Exceeds Initial Target in Abandoned Horse Gathering
The Uintah Animal Control and Shelter Special Service District has exceeded its initial target of gathering 175 horses in their first series of gathers. According to their press release, Uintah Animal Control, working with a licensed and insured horse gather company, has successfully removed 296 estray, abandoned and/or nuisance horses from public lands in Uintah County. Most of the horses were gathered from January 7th to January 11th in an area designated as a “public safety corridor” between Highway 40, State Road 45 and the Green River.
Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Phone Scam
Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is the latest agency to share a scam warning with the public. “Our area is being hit by another round of phone scams from callers claiming to be with the Social Security Administration,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “These callers demand personal information and may threaten to have you arrested if you don’t provide it. Of course, this is a scam. These callers want your personal information so they can steal from you. They cannot have you arrested for refusing to give them your personal information. Please, if you get a call like this, hang up the phone. It’s the easiest way to protect yourself from being scammed.” If you are concerned about a call you have received, contact your local law enforcement.
