Uintah Animal Control Gathering Estray, Abandoned and/or Nuisance Horses

The Uintah Animal Control and Shelter Special Service District announced Monday that they will be conducting periodic drives and gathers “to reduce the growing number of estray, abandoned and/or nuisance horses living on open range in specific areas of the county.” The Uintah County Commission approved an executive order on December 9th directing the District to gather the horses within the project area. In order to comply with the order the District plans to conduct periodic drives and gathers from January 6th through April 1st. The project area stretches from the Colorado-Utah state line to the border with Ute Tribal lands and from the White River in the south area of Uintah County to the Green River in the north.

All Invited Today: Possible Far Reaching Effects of Tax Bill on Uintah Basin

It's a special Vernal Chamber Luncheon today at noon and all are invited to come learn about a topic very important to the Uintah Basin economy and livelihood. The Vernal Chamber shares that the presenter for the luncheon is Francis Gibson, State House of Representatives Majority Leader and Co-Chair of the Tax Committee. “He will be presenting on the Tax Reform Bill that is currently being considered in the Utah State Legislature,” shares the Chamber. “This bill has far reaching effects on our area. We need to be informed on what it contains and what it will need. Please come and invite others to come with you.” Uintah County is providing the lunch at the event taking place today, Tuesday, December 10th, at the Uintah Conference Center at Noon.

Vernal Theatre: Live Holding Auditions for Jane Eyre the Musical

The epic life story of Jane Eyre was originally published in 1847 and has impacted the lives of those that read it since. It has been referenced in various forms of pop culture as well as being a book, a movie, a television series and a musical. The Uintah Basin will soon be the stage for Jane Eyre the Musical presented by Vernal Theatre: Live. Auditions for the play will be held Wednesday, December 11th and Thursday, December 12th from 7pm to 10pm. Those that are interested should prepare 60 seconds of a song in Broadway style (the time limit will be enforced) with their own pianist or recorded music without backup vocals.

Carol’s Glove Tree Spreading Christmas Spirit Again This Year

Just like every year, ‘Carol’s Glove Tree’ is on display on Brush Creek Road and young and old are welcome to stop and pick their own pair of gloves. Carol and Asa Evans started placing gloves on the special tree over 12 years ago as their own Christmas season tradition. The effort has grown over the years with some years giving away around 300 pairs of gloves and some years reaching as high as 600 pair. The tree is set on the road near their home providing the Evans with a great view of the excited visitors.

Suspected DUI Driver Crashes Into Markdown Motors Lot in Roosevelt

An accident did major damage to multiple parked vehicles at a dealership in Roosevelt on Saturday and police suspect it's an incidence of DUI. According to Roosevelt Police Chief Rick Harrison, on December 7th, at about 11:30pm “a 2014 Dodge pickup driven by 37-year-old Drew Mctavish of Ballard lost control of his vehicle while westbound on Highway 40 near Markdown Motors. The vehicle crashed into 4 vehicles on the car lot. Mctavish was arrested for investigation of suspected DUI, open container, lane travel, and no insurance.”

Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus Rings in Christmas Season with Concerts

The Vernal Middle School was a hub of families eager to feel the Christmas spirit through beautiful music on Saturday and the Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus certainly delivered. The organization’s annual Christmas concerts are held the first Saturday in December and are comprised each year of traditional and non-traditional Christmas music performed by a full orchestra, large choir, and children’s choir. Dancers from Studio R also add to the experience during select songs where they perform in the aisles.

Duchesne County School District Holds Career Fair at Roosevelt Junior High

On Wednesday, December 4th, Duchesne County School District had a career fair for all seventh and eighth graders from Roosevelt Junior High, Altamont High, and Tabiona High held at the Roosevelt Junior High School. It included a total of 704 students with 26 different breakout sessions and approximately 36 presenters from various companies and businesses. This career fair was for the students to attend a variety of sessions to explore different job and career opportunities.

As we inch closer to Christmas Day there will be several chances for children to visit with Santa Claus as he will be popping by different events this week. Today, December 9th, be sure to stop by the Vernal City building for story time with Santa. There will be two times, one at 1:30pm and the other at 2:45pm, both in the community room on the 1st floor. Later today at 5pm, Santa will arrive at the Roosevelt Tree Lighting by fire truck. On Wednesday, December 11th, Santa Claus is coming to UBTech at the Roosevelt Campus.

If you have any question whether or not winter has arrived just take a visit to the North Slope of the Uintah Mountains. Ashley National Forest announced on Thursday that all roads on the Flaming Gorge Ranger District are now closed to normal traffic though they are open to over-the-snow vehicles. “If you head out to the Forest to recreate this winter please plan for cold and snow,” shares Ashley National Forest. “Make sure someone not going with you knows where you are going and when to expect your return.”

USU Ozone Alert Program Underway for Winter 2019-2020

The USU Ozone Alert program is now underway for the 2019-2020 winter season. The program issues alerts when ozone in excess of the United States EPA standard of 70 parts per billion is predicted anywhere in the Uinta Basin, when a high ozone episode ends or is predicted to end, and when conditions change significantly from earlier predictions. The hope of the program is that community members will use the information to reduce air pollution during periods when air quality is likely to be impaired.
