Opioid/Heroin Awareness Community Outreach at Fort Duchesne

Opioids and heroin are an epidemic problem even in the Uintah Basin. It is such a problem that the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Police Academy and the Division of Drug Enforcement will be holding an Opioid/Heroin Awareness Community Outreach meeting entitled Opioids/Heroin in Indian Country. The meeting will present information on the opioid/heroin trends that they are seeing around the country that might affect the indian reservations in the future.

Sub For Seniors Delivers Christmas Cheer to Local Seniors

With one less week between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, the volunteers behind the local Sub For Seniors program were feeling the crunch this week. Amazingly, enough donations came in and the teams of volunteers were able to deliver the goodies to local senior citizens on Thursday. Marathon Petroleum has been a major supporter of the Sub For Seniors program and, in addition to being one of the main sponsors, they showed up in force on Thursday to get the deliveries done.

Duchesne Will Host Interfaith Christ-Centered Christmas Sing-Along

The shepherds of the Christmas story saw an angel with a” multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!” Now those of various Christian faiths can gather as a community and sing songs of praise. The sing-along is entitled “Singing with the Stars” and will feature carols of David Archuleta, Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, Gentri, Cee Lo Green, the Tabernacle Choir and more. Individuals and families of all ages are invited to just show up with family and friends. Nice casual dress is preferred.

Roosevelt City Police Welcome New K-9 Named Tips

Roosevelt City Police Department has welcomed a new officer with a great nose. Tips, a mixed-breed narcotics K-9, was certified last week with his handlers, Officer Harrison and Officer Knight, and performed exceptionally well. Roosevelt Police now has three K-9s and four handlers, shares Roosevelt Police Chief Rick Harrison. The K-9s are all narcotics trained and are deployed several times each week on Roosevelt cases as well as with other agencies such as Utah Highway Patrol.

Shop With A Cop Spreading Joy for Local Kids

While there are many wonderful charitable causes going on during the holidays, the Shop With A Cop program is one with a special purpose. Kim Boren with Vernal City Police explains that Shop With a Cop is an opportunity for local kids who have had a difficult experience where police were present or involved, whether they were victims of a crime or perhaps they witnessed a parent being arrested. “We want them to have a positive experience with law enforcement to know we are there to help them,” shares Boren.

Daggett County Commissioners Provide Monthly Update

The Daggett County Commission shared several updates in their monthly newsletter. The Commissioners announced that Daggett County’s Uintah Basin Medical Center location is back to full speed open Monday through Thursday and a dentist will be coming two days a month starting in January. They also offered their thanks and praise to Rick and Mandy Slaugh as well as Syndee Johnson for running the Sub for Santa effort. They have accomplished this huge yearly effort since the 1990’s and this is their final year of service running the program.

TriCounty Health director Jordan Mathis explains that most people gain at least one pound during the holiday season and that the extra weight tends to stick around. Researchers have found that “people don’t tend to shed that winter weight by next year. After a few sugary Christmas seasons (plus the year’s other indulgent holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries) those pounds add up.

Uintah Middle School WinterFest Tonight

There is nothing like a good Christmas party to get you in the holiday spirit. A great party is like being at the North Pole. Well, Uintah Middle School is hosting its second annual “Winterfest” and it is going to be an amazing event! Students and families are invited to share in this magical night. There will be a trip on the Polar Express, an exploration of Candyland, and a visit to the Island of Misfit Toys. Many wonderful memories will be made as some of the activities include Christmas Karaoke, indoor snowball fighting, cookie decorating, holiday crafts, UMS band and choir performances, stargazing and so much more.
