Ashley Valley Calvary Chapel Holds Operation Christmas Child Packing Party

The congregation members of Ashley Valley Calvary Chapel gathered for a great cause this week as they continue their work of spreading light throughout the world. The group held a packing party for Operation Christmas Child, a special program which consists of packing individual shoe boxes with toys and goodies for less fortunate children throughout the world. Craig City Council to Replace Former Councilman Arrested in Child Sex Sting

Craig City has begun the process to replace the former councilman arrested in October as part of an internet child sex sting. 48-year-old Brian Paul Mackenzie was arrested on October 11th for the crimes of Internet Luring of a Child, Internet Sexual Exploitation of a Child, and Criminal Attempt Sexual Assault on a Child. The day before, an undercover officer posted a picture on a social media site posing as an underage female.

Roosevelt Police Offer Details on This Year’s ‘Shop with a Cop’ Event

‘Shop with a Cop’ is a favorite holiday tradition and Roosevelt Police is sharing information on this year’s event. Once again, the event will be held at Stewarts Market/Ace Hardware in Roosevelt. Those that have children ages 4 to 12 that need a little help with Christmas are encouraged to contact their clergy or a local civic organization like DCFS or Rotary and have them refer the children to the Roosevelt Police Department.

Duchesne County School District ‘Extra Degree’ Recipients for November

The Duchesne County School Board honored this month’s ‘Extra Degree’ recipients at their latest board meeting. School Resource Officer Clint Robinson is known for his positive relationships with the students he works to protect so it no surprise he was among those selected. Student Services Director Scott Forsyth says that one thing he loves about working with Officer Robinson is “the relationship he builds with kids. He’s a friend, someone they can go to if they have trouble or need help.”

Duchesne County Enchanted Forest Tradition Happening This Weekend

The Uintah Basin is known for having a capricorn of holiday traditions that overflows our hearts with gratitude. One such tradition is the Duchesne County ENCHANTED FOREST. Last year’s event was a success with 21 trees raising $120,000 dollars for local charities. An additional $30,000 dollars were raised in tree sponsorships as well as another $10,000 dollars on the silent auction items. A ‘Story Hour with Santa’ as part of the event was also a success with 250 kids in attendance.

Ute Tribal Enterprises has announced a new special holiday tradition they plan to make an annual event. “This year, Ute Tribal Enterprises, LLC, is planning a tree lighting ceremony outside of the Ute Plaza to provide families with the opportunity to come together and remember and honor their departed loved ones,” shares the event announcement. “They will be able to join with other families who are also facing this holiday season without someone special. Uintah Student Selected as U.S. Presidential Scholar

A Uintah High School student has plenty of reasons to smile. Jared Connelly has been selected as one of only five students in the state to represent Utah as a U.S. Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education. “Jared will now enter the National contest and if he does well there, will be awarded with an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC, where he will receive his medallion,” shares Uintah High School. “Students are nominated based on: academic rigor; technical competence; employability skills; and ingenuity/creativity/problem solving.

Bull Elk Illegally Killed for Antlers in Dinosaur; Officials Searching for Suspects

Colorado Parks and Wildlife are looking for two individuals believed to be involved in the illegal killing of a bull elk in Dinosaur last week. According to the CPW news release, investigators have descriptions of two vehicles believed to be involved in the killing: a white 80s model Chevrolet truck with Utah plates and a newer silver Chevy truck with its plate covered in mud. “Investigators believe the bull – described as 'docile' by residents of the small, northwestern Colorado community – was shot through the abdomen on November 6th before it wandered onto a local ranch and died,” shares officials.

Uintah Basin Employment Report

Based on the numbers, employment in the Uintah Basin continues to slowly improve. According to the new data from the Department of Workforce Services, Daggett County’s nonfarm employment for October was 395, up from 378 a year ago. Duchesne County registered at 8,022 employed versus 7,823 one year prior. Uintah County reported 13,114 employed versus 12,956 the year before. Unemployment numbers also support the assessment that conditions are slowly improving in the Uintah Basin.

Give’m Health: The Great American Smokeout November 21st

TriCounty Health is inviting residents to join in the Great American Smokeout this Thursday, an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The challenge is for smokers to take the first step and pledge to quit smoking for at least 24 hours as a step toward quitting for good. Over 34 million people or 14 percent of the population in the United States smoke cigarettes. Tragically, 480,000 people also die every year related to tobacco use making smoking the number 1 preventable cause of death in the U.S. Unfortunately, the TriCounty Health District is the second highest in the state for adults who smoke, reaching 17.5 percent.
