It’s better safe than sorry when it comes to the potential of spreading an illness. The Uintah County Western Park announced Saturday that their facility is now on quarantine pending test results for Vesicular Stomatitis Virus, an illness that affects primarily horses.

‘Hunt Fire’ Burning in Colorado; Adding to Smoke in Uintah Basin Skies
Smoke in the air was undeniable this weekend in much of the Uintah Basin due to wildfires, primarily in neighboring Colorado. The main contributor comes from Rio Blanco County. According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, the Hunt Fire is burning on BLM land about 26 miles southwest of Meeker and was estimated on Sunday to have grown to 2,300 acres.
Natural Gas Initiative Continues Efforts for Expansion
The Western States and Tribal Nations Natural Gas Initiative has been in the works for years aiming to expand the markets for natural gas and stakeholders in Utah and the Uintah Basin have been among those involved. A main goal in the effort is the approval and construction of the Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas export terminal at Coos Bay, Oregon.
Uintah County 4-H Service Project Open to the Community
Being involved in service always uplifts your day and the Uintah County 4-H program has an opportunity for just that. They have teamed up with Tiny Tim’s Foundation for Kids to cut out shorts and skirts to make kits. For those that might be skiddish because there might be a thought of sewing need not fear, it is a sewing free project. Uintah County 4-H will serve those that serve by providing pizza and dessert to those that come.
Duchesne County School District Reminds Parents Canvas Access Coming
The Duchesne County School District is working to implement processes and tools that aid everybody, from teachers to students to parents, in the education journey. One such tool is the new learning management system called Canvas. The system is currently used by most school districts in Utah (including many universities) and will be used in the secondary schools in the district. Curriculum Director Jason Young shares that "the district is working toward a more personalized approach to helping students.
UDOT Strawberry Valley Highway 40 Construction Update
UDOT provided a construction update on the Strawberry Valley Highway 40 project on Thursday. As always the take home message is that all travelers need to plan ahead for construction delays, allow extra travel time, and take alternate routes when possible.
6th Annual Recovery Days Starts Tonight
The local version of an amazing national event is kicking off its 6th annual celebration of recovery tonight. The Vernal City Recovery Day Coalition is made up of the local voices for recovery that declare ‘Together We Are Stronger.’ “Recovery Days is an opportunity for individuals in recovery to celebrate their recovery,” shares event coordinator Deb Prisbey. “Everyone gets to mingle and enjoy a day of celebration and hope.” Friday night things kick off with speakers from 5 to 7pm followed by live music until 11pm.
Local Oil Company Closer to Bringing Plant Back Online for Production
In a released statement, Petroteq Energy Inc. shares that they are getting closer to bringing their Vernal plant back online. The plant has been going through a re-engineering design as the company upgrades its patented-proprietary technology that features fully integrated surface oil sands mining.
DWR Electrofishing in the Green River
For those fishing or hanging out at the Green River you might have caught sight of something a little unusual. Fear not, it was a Division of Wildlife Resources approved activity. The DWR spent Tuesday and Wednesday electrofishing. The process sounds like it hurts but it is actually quite safe and very proficient technique to survey fish populations.
Uintah County Heritage Museum Starting Museum Kids in September
Uintah County Heritage Museum is excited to announce that they will be starting up their Museum Kids program. For those that do not know, this program is designed for parents and their preschoolers. Each week the museum will talk about Museum Etiquette, take part of a hands-on activity and learn about the subject of the month. This month the program’s theme is Let’s Explore Water.
