Come Cheer at the Special Olympics Annual Bocce Ball Tournament

You won’t find athletes with more heart than our local Special Olympians and they would love to have support at their upcoming competition. The local Special Olympics Bocce Ball Tournament is this month and volunteers and a cheering section are needed. Bocce Ball is one of the events that the North Eastern Utah Division of Special Olympics participates in each year at a regional and state level.

Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office Encourages Reporting Overdoses

The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging the public to report overdoses and is spelling out what the Overdose Good Samaritan Law means for those who report. If an individual believes that another person is experiencing an overdose, the reporting party can be immune from arrest, charge, or prosecution for certain controlled substance possession and paraphernalia offenses by calling 9-1-1 and dispatching emergency help in the event of an overdose, shares the Sheriff’s Office.

Precautions Urged As West Nile Virus Present in TriCounty Health District

Officials are urging locals to take precautions to prevent West Nile Virus. Uintah Mosquito Abatement District representative Kirk Robbins encourages residents to remove standing water in yards and around homes to limit contact with mosquitos. TriCounty Health District is also reminding individuals to wear long sleeves and to use DEET if going to enjoy the outdoors.

Vernal City Council Approves Vacating Portion of 400 West

Vernal City Council has approved vacating one block of 400 West next the Temple owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The process started several months ago when Vernal City began researching the idea because the Church purchased six properties on that block to develop an off-street parking lot east of the Temple.

Changes big and small are happening in Vernal, all in an effort to bring new life to the historic downtown area. Dinosaur themed blade signs for downtown businesses are the latest focus of the Downtown Revitalization Committee. The blade signs are pedestrian scale that will be installed perpendicular to the face of each building in order to be easily read by pedestrians.

Bender Mountain Fire Burning in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming

The Bender Mountain Fire is burning in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming. According to Wyoming’s Sweetwater County Fire Warden Mike Bournazian, Sweetwater County crews responded shortly before midnight on Sunday in the Clay Basin area where the wildland fire was burning east of Highway 191 in the area of the Utah State line, only about 2 and a half miles south of where the three corners of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado meet.

Daggett County Accident Sends One to Hospital

Seat belts likely saved lives in an accident on SR-44 in Daggett County on Monday night. According to Utah Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at Mile Post 6 between the turnoff for Red Canyon Lodge and Moose Pond.  There were three vehicles traveling in a row and the first slowed down because deer were crossing the road.

Retired Salt Lake Police Officer Identified as Flaming Gorge Drowning Victim

Sunday’s drowning victim at Flaming Gorge has been identified. Many family and friends are mourning the tragic loss of Mikal Wersland and among those are his Salt Lake area law enforcement family. Wersland retired from the force about a year ago but worked for South Salt Lake Police, Unified Police, and was a SWAT member for many years.

Commercial Truck Crashes After Losing Brakes on Highway 191 North of Vernal

A three axle commercial truck crashed on Highway 191 north of Vernal on Monday afternoon. According to Utah Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at Mile Post 368 just below Windy Point at about 2:18pm.  “It was coming down the mountain following a truck and trailer in front of it when it lost its brakes,” shares Lt. Brett Gehring.
