Weather is warming up and folks are enjoying fun in the great outdoors. TriCounty Health Department is urging safety first by offering two youth ATV safety courses this month. “This came about because Primary Children’s Hospital looked at what injuries were coming in to them,” explains TriCounty Health representative Jeramie Tubbs.

NRA Youth Hunter Education Challenge
Building the next generation of hunters; that’s the goal and purpose of the YHEC, Youth Hunter Education Challenge, put on by the National Rifle Association. To the excitement of many, the NRA Youth Hunter Education Challenge for the state of Utah is being held this weekend in Vernal.
Craig Woman Assaults Officer
A Craig woman was arrested on Sunday after assaulting a police officer. At 12:18am, officers responded to a report of a homeless woman who was intoxicated and upset at a local hotel. The woman was with a man who was also intoxicated and upset.
Senator Mike Lee Makes Stops in Basin
Senator Mike Lee visited the Uintah Basin on Tuesday. Vernal was among his stops where he spoke at length on Basin relevant topics. Sage grouse, the EPA, health care and economic recovery were among the topics explored but a running theme was the danger of big government and over-regulation.
Corrections Officer on Internet Safety
Parents are responsible for their children’s health and wellbeing and internet safety is a key component in that quest. Sgt. Rue Larsen from the Utah State Corrections Office visited the Uintah Basin last week and added his expertise to the topic. Larsen recommends keeping an open line of communication between yourself, your kids and your spouse, making sure to set clear rules.
Turkey Hunt Coming Up
Plenty of permits are still available for the turkey hunt in May. According to Jason Robinson, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, the general statewide hunt provides several advantages.

It’s road construction season and Vernal City Police is urging citizens throughout the Basin to put safety first. Navigating work zones largely comes down to managing speed and space. Slow down when approaching all work zones and follow posted speed limits.
New Repairs to Steinaker Reservoir; No Limit on Fishing
While locals have known repairs to Steinaker Reservoir were coming, new repairs have been announced. According to DWR Regional Aquatics Manager Trina Hedrick, the Bureau of Reclamation is draining Steinaker further than originally planned in order to repair the dam and improve it for earthquake safety.

Hikers Go Missing in Grand Canyon National Park
A well-respected local woman and her grandson tragically went missing Saturday evening while hiking at Grand Canyon National Park. According to Park Services, an alert was received from a personal locating beacon in a backcountry area of the Grand Canyon on Saturday evening, April 15th.
